Thursday Night Wrap-Up

Presented by Good Boy Vodka: Because Even Legends Need Hydration (and a little bite).

Hello again, friends. Jim Nantz here, whispering softly from under a picnic table behind the 13th green, where John Daly is currently blending Good Boy Vodka with Pedialyte and calling it “The Augusta Flu Shot.”

Day One of the Masters is in the books, and while the leaderboard is starting to take shape, the storylines are coming in faster than a left hook from Angel Cabrera.

⛳ Leaderboard Highlights – Actual Golf Edition:

  • Justin Rose finds himself three shots clear at -7, which is great news for fans of soft-spoken Englishmen and swing tempo smoother than your grandfather’s jazz collection.

  • Corey Conners, Scottie Scheffler, and Ludvig Åberg lurk in the shadows, each within striking distance, and all desperately hoping the ghost of Amen Corner doesn’t yank them into Rae’s Creek tomorrow.

  • Speaking of Rae’s Creek…

🚽 The Ballester Incident

It’s true. José Luis Ballester, the Spanish amateur with the poise of Seve and the bladder control of a nervous chihuahua, literally urinated in Rae’s Creek on national television.

We wish this was satire. But no. As Justin Thomas sorted out an issue on the green, young José Luis made the fateful decision to step into Augusta’s most hallowed waters and “release the pressure.”

One witness claimed he whispered “¡Lo siento, Señor Hogan!” as he zipped up.

In related news, Nick Dunlap—who had already sacrificed multiple balls to Rae’s Creek—has requested his shots be retroactively declared “biohazard relief drops.”

🧢 Fashion Crimes of Day One

  • Sergio Garcia arrived dressed like a sentient Happy Meal—bold red shirt, bright yellow pants, and the swagger of a man who’s been kicked out of more Ryder Cups than he’s won.

Kids cried. Grown men shielded their eyes. Indigo barked for five straight minutes.

He’s currently at even par, though most agree his color choices were at least a triple bogey.  Can’t wait to see his homage to the Hamburglar tomorrow.

  • Jason Day donned a relatively tame getup for round one – likely following a preemptive phone call from Chairman Fred Ridley to the folks at Malbon threatening banishment for any looks similar to the NASCAR meets Cosby sweaters of 2024.

  • In his final Augusta appearance, Bernhard Langer brought the (tomato) sauce. Decked head to toe in bright scarlet, he looked as though he had a front-row seat at the Red Wedding.

📊 Disgusta Pool Standings

Kyle Strowe and Reid Morelli sit atop the pile, locked in a tie at -21, both undoubtedly already pricing out new drivers they will use to launch balls 40 yards into an adjoining fairway.

Chasing them:

  • Team RedHat – Chris Collier and James Chinn – are joined by Ben Lumsden at just one shot off the lead.

  • Rookie Eyleen Barnes currently holds the top spot for the ladies at 17-under with another four female contenders just one stroke behind her, including two cards by the lesser of the Ulmer children.

And once again, Indi—our sweet four-legged mascot—remains in last place, though she did point out a squirrel during the back nine, which was arguably more helpful than picking Nick Dunlap.

🧔 Daly After Dark

We caught up with John Daly earlier at the Hooters parking lot on Washington Road, where he was tailgating in a folding chair beside an El Camino wrapped in camo and denim.

Quote of the night:

“I once peed in Rae’s Creek too. It’s deeper than it looks.”

He then lit a Marlboro with a tee, signed a can of Good Boy Vodka for a toddler, and told us he might “give this whole Masters thing another go next year if they allow carts and cart girls.”

I won’t hold my breath.

We’ll be back tomorrow with updates on the cut line chaos, more leaderboard swings, and whether Ballester’s incident requires a formal EPA investigation.

Until then, keep your vodka chilled and rest your refresh fingers. We’ll see you in the morning for Round 2 coverage.

Live From Disgusta, this is Jim Nantz, signing off.
